Unreal Engine and their contempt for the little guys

[Galaxyi]

Unreal 6's announcement is filled with corpo speech to bait investors into pouring money in. But what is it really about?
Well, they want to make a roblox clone. And their base is Fortnite.

Oh what's that? You spent the last 12 years learning blueprints? Oh? They're useful? Like very useful? Okay then! We'll remove them. Why? Because fuck you is why.

Man I sure love Epic Games. So, as a developer using Unreal (or even just a gamer who knows about it), what do you dislike about the engine? I'm sure there is a myriad of reasons.

If I read that whole announcement correctly (which I prob didn't cuz I am also kind of cooked), it just seems really weird that they seemingly want every game to be set in the fortnite universe?

"Fortnite cosmetics will be our first real proof point of portability. We will start by moving the base system to an open UE6 module. This means you'll have the option to use a player's entitled Fortnite Outfits in your own games, and you'll get the tools to build Outfits for your own games that work inside Fortnite"

tbf Freddy Fazbear in a fortnite outfit would be peak but still, Epic really does want UE6 to be Roblox don't they, hilarious.

And yea the mention of AI for "productivity and creativity" l m a o. I believe there was a video of someone from Epic, didn't search up who it was specifically, who was using Claude in UE 5.8, and he legit asked the AI to tweak the way the Directional Light looks, which took way longer than just... tweaking it manually, but apparently Claude got it wrong

I'm just afraid that UE6 will spawn the sloppiest of sloppy slop, because obviously big corporations don't give much of fuck and want the MONEYSSS

They really are just doing this to please investors. AI is the big current tech thing at the moment, way bigger than NFTs. Because unlike NFTs, they aren't inherently a scam. AI has potential, but it's being pushed way too far to the point it's gotten ridiculous.

Having an agent review your code to pick up on small mistakes you'd usually miss is nice. But you know what would be nicer? Having this agent run on your system directly, offline. It doesn't need a super computer to run for basic syntax checking and execution order. Even recursive checks are cheap. If you have 16gb of VRAM you have more than enough to run something somewhat intelligent. I would like to see this, and it's already possible on IDEs like Rider.

Rider allows you to tether your local AI to the editor and have it work like normal. I haven't made full use of it yet but it's a nice option. Will Epic do this? Perhaps. Maybe they'll do it and mention it in a small footnote of a giant patch note. Because it sure as hell doesn't attract money.

But then what are our alternatives? Sure right now we can stick to Unreal 5, but it won't be working forever. So what else do we really have?

start developing games in mm

what's funny is you probably could do that if you tried hard enough

I'd rather use Source's jank
